An easy way to get control of your to-do list: The best apps for getting control of your out-of-control list

An easy way to manage your to-do list and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.

Plus, a great tool to make sure you’re working on the highest priorities first.

  • Are you drowning in to-dos?
  • Is stuff falling through the cracks?
  • Do you have lists everywhere — on your phone, on your calendar, and on sticky notes?
  • Plus do you have questions in email that need a response?
  • And, you might have piles of paper that you need to process, like bills to pay, school forms to complete, and birthday invitations to handle?
  • And, do you keep forgetting to reply to those voice-mails, texts, and messages?

On top of it all, the holidays are quickly approaching and it’s all going to get crazier and more challenging to manage.

I can help.

About 7 years ago, I found an easy way to consolidate, track and manage all of this and I’ve used the process consistently since then.  I don’t know about you but there are very few things I’ve done consistently for 7 years…  (my abs would look amazing if I had been working out consistently for 7 years!).  I think these are the signs of a great process:

  • Something you use consistently AND
  • Your life starts to veer out of control if you drop the habit for just a few days

In this article, I’m going to tell you my secret to keeping track of everything, which is my favorite to-do list app called Toodledo.

Plus I’ll give you a comparison of the top to-do lists apps, so you can pick the right one for you and finally get control of the s*@! coming at you from all different directions.

First, a short rant and then I’ll get back to the point,  There are some productivity experts who are anti-to-do list.  They say the most successful people don’t use to-do lists (they just schedule what needs to be done instead) and neither should we.  I’m not sure who these magical people are who can somehow remember everything and get it done but I’m pretty sure their assistants keep to-do lists on their behalf.  Somebody has a list even if it’s not them directly!  Can you imagine living without lists?

My fave tool is Toodledo but there are some other great options out there.  Again, the best advice is to pick something you’ll use and stick to it.

So here’s the comparison:

(A note: I have several friends who love Wunderlist.  Microsoft bought it a few years ago and has announced they will shut it down soon.  So, I haven’t included it in the comparison.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news to the Wunderlist lovers but maybe the list below will help you find an alternative.  I don’t think Microsoft’s replacement is very robust so I haven’t included it in the chart below.)

Think of an easy-to-use powerful spreadsheet that you can sort, filter, and mass update. Very powerful but not as sleek.

I love Toodledo.  I am a spreadsheet fanatic and like to add lots of sort-able info to my tasks, so I can plan them out more effectively. An easy way to get control of your to-do list: The best apps for getting control of your out-of-control to-do list

I also love the calendar view.  You can click on the date and all the actions pull up.

Plus, there are some simple add-on tools for Toodledo that allow you to automatically create your tasks.  I don’t want to give too much away from the next blog post but think of a simple system that automatically creates a to-do on your list when you miss a phone call.  Magic!

For anyone who is more of a minimalist, I think any.do is a great option.  I especially like the ‘moments’ feature (which you can use up to 5 times a month for free).  It makes your to-do list into a game where you can swipe the to-dos into categories – today, later, done, delete.

There are so many apps out there to track to-dos.  The key is to find one you will actually use and then use it for EVERYTHING.  If you only use it for some things and still have a mixture of paper, calendar, stickies, emails, etc, your chaos will continue.
